It is my pleasure to extend my personal invitation for you to attend and participate in the Okaigan Dojo, Northern California Invitational tournament. The tournament will be held on Sunday May 16, 2010 in Cupertino, California.

It is with great honor to announce that Jim and Laura Doyle, both Pan American Karate Officials, will be officiating at our tournament!

This will be a great tournament for our junior competitors and students with little or no experience as well as with some of the best athletes in Northern California.

All contestants must be a 2010, registered athlete with the USA National Karate-do Federation or you may purchase a Day Membership for $5.00. • Sunday, day of tournament, from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM

Mandatory Equipment
• White Traditional GI required for competitors.
• Those participating in Kumite (fighting events) must wear red/blue hand pads, groin cup (boys/men), and mouthpiece. Red and blue shin/instep guards or white are optional, but recommended. Headgear and chest guards are optional

KATA RULES
• Flag system will be used for Individual Kata and Team Kata
• Point system will be used for special needs and Kobudo
Unless otherwise determined by the tournament organizing committee or the tournament director:
Competitors 17 years old and younger in the Beginner, Novice and Intermediate divisions shall perform their Katas two competitors at a time.

Advanced competitors shall perform their Katas two competitors at a time, except during the gold medal match.

Competitors 18 years old and older shall perform their katas one at a time.

Beginner and Novice competitors may perform only the following Katas:
Taikyoku
Heian - Pinan
Gekisai
Fukyu Kata
Kihon Kata

Intermediate competitors may use any kata and may repeat their kata, except in the gold medal match, they must choose a kata they have not yet performed.
Advanced competitors may use any kata, but each round must be a different kata, no kata’s may be repeated.

KUMITE RULES
• Duration of the kumite bout
• 11 and under = one and a half minutes
• 12+ = two minutes
Face Contact
Adults (Age 18 and over)
Non-injurious, light, controlled "touch" contact to the face, head and neck (but not to he throat) with hand and foot techniques are allowed.

Youth Age 17 and Under
No touch or contact to the head, face or neck (including the facemask and head
Protector) is allowed with hand techniques. Jodan kicks may make the lightest touch ("skin touch") and still score. Any more than a skin touch will require a warning or penalty unless caused by the recipient (Mubobi).

Team Kata Boys/Girls Men/Women may be mixed for all levels/ages
Team Kumite Boys/Girls Men/Women may be mixed for 9 and under and 10-13 ONLY
In Team Kumite all 3 athletes will compete however the winning team is the one with the most bout victories. Should the two teams have the same number of bout victories, then the winning team shall be the one with the most points, taking both winning and losing bouts into account.

JR Performance Division:
This is for our younger students (ages 4-6) who have not quite learned a kata yet. They may perform a section of their kata or perform any combinations of punches and/or kicking techniques for up to 30 seconds. Each student in this division will be receiving a medal.

Blind Fold Kata:
Participants will begin on a designated area/spot. They will perform their kata of choice blindfolded. At the end of the performance the distance between the start and end point will be measured. The participant who is closest will be deemed the winner.

Special Needs Division:
Students in this division may perform a kata or perform any combinations of punches and kicking techniques.



Medical Release:
Adult & Minor Amateur Athletic Waiver and Release of Liability
Inconsideration of being allowed to participate in any way in the USA National Karate-do Federation athletics/sports program, and related events and activities, the undersigned:

1.Agrees that prior to participating, they (if under 18) Parent or Guardian, will inspect the facilities and equipment to be used, and if the participant and or Parent or Guardian, believes anything is unsafe, they will immediately advise their coach or supervisor or USA National Karate-do Federation or Sports, Fitness & Karate Inc/JKR Okaigan Dojo personnel of such condition(s) and refuse to participate.

2. Acknowledge and fully understand that each participant will be engaging in activities that involve risk of serious injury, including permanent disability and death, and severe social and economic losses, which might result not only from their own actions, inaction ‘s or negligence but the actions, inaction's or negligence of others, the rules of play, or the condition of the premises or of any equipment used. Further, that there may be other risks not known to us or not reasonably foreseeable at this time. Assume all the foregoing risks and accept personal responsibility for the damages following such injury, permanent disability or death.

3. Release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue The USA National Karate-do Federation, Cupertino High School, its officers, its affiliated clubs, regional sports organizations, their respective administrators, directors. Agents, coaches and other employees of the organization, other participants, sponsoring agencies, sponsors, advertisers, and if applicable, owners and lessees of premises used to conduct the event, all of which are hereinafter referred to as “releases” from any and all liability to each of the undersigned, his or her heirs and next of kin for any and all claims, demands, losses or damages on account of injury including death or damage to property, caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the release or otherwise.

4. All entries are final, no refunds will he given. I fully understand that any medical treatment given will be of first aid treatment type only. I consent that any pictures furnished by me or any pictures taken of me 'in connection with the Tournament can be used for publicity, promotion or television showing now or in the future, and I waive compensation in regard thereto. All participants in any event or class in this Tournament is by permission only. The Director or his authorized agent(s) reserve the right to refuse entry to any person, school, team or club.

5. PLEASE NOTE: All athletes must be covered by health or medical insurance in order to compete. Participant Secondary Medical Insurance is included as a benefit of USA-NKF membership. Non-members without medical insurance coverage may obtain Secondary, Medical Insurance for $5.00(day pass). Please see Registration Desk personnel for necessary' forms.

6. Statement of Health. By me and/or Parent/Guardian's signature below I confirm that I am in sound health and there is no reason why I cannot participate in this championship and/or event. The undersigned has read the above waiver and release, understand that they have given up substantial rights by signing it and sign it voluntarily.
